Many of us spend a lot of time on this earth, traveling through time, making plans, and going about one day to the next. It is often not until you are slapped in the face that you take the time to learn a law or the laws in your state or area. You blindly walk through your day unaware of all the laws you are or may potentially be breaking. You ignorantly quote heard laws you believe are sufficient to help you win a debate; but, do you really know the laws that matter in your life.

Take the inheritance law (Here, I can only use the two states I know, Louisiana and Florida. I share this as an example of how different they can be from one area to the next), in every state of the U.S. there is a law regarding inheritance. If you have living parents, distant relatives, etc. it is good for you to know what the laws are in your area. This will help you when the unfortunate time comes to dividing his/her/their estates.

Louisiana versus Florida

In Louisiana, the inheritance law says that no person under the age of 24 can be disinherited from any parent’s estate. A person(s) who is over the age of 24 can be only if it is “just cause”. Just case means if you accused your parent of a capital crime or have been a delinquent to society (drugs, gangs, in and out of prison or jail) you can be removed from receiving your inheritance. But, for no other reason, can you be removed from equal portions of your parents’ estate. Equally interesting, should one parent die before the next, the other parent only has use rights to the community property. That means if there is a business on the property, you don’t get paid profits; but, you do have a vested interest and it cannot be sold without your permission. Also, should you pass and have children, your children are entitled to your share of the estate – and cannot be willed out.

In Florida, the inheritance law is quite different. You are in control of your own estate and do as you please with such states. Should your parents desire to leave you out of the will, it is legal for them to do so without “just cause”. You are not entitled to anything they have or that they do not wish to have simply because you are their child. This should help you to see just how different the laws can vary from place to place. On your road to becoming a happier person, it is wise to check out your states’ or area’s laws to ensure you do not find yourself on the other side of the law and in a place of stress. Trust me, saying you did not know something is a legal defense. It is your duty to know the laws that you must abide by. Equally, just because you never got into anything this far, does not mean nothing can ever happen to you. One mistake can forever change your life.

Fun Fact: Take the texting while driving law in Florida. People believe it to be a great law because it is there to stop those wanting to be texters from causing accidents to innocent people on the roads. Unfortunately, many people mistake this for ONLY texting. That is not the case, you can fall under this law by social media posting, emailing, changing your podcast or radio app, plus texting. What happens should you kill someone under this law? You are looking at a minimum of 10 years in prison (even on your first offense). Thinking about that little factor on your happiness progression. Picture your life ten years from this moment and being cut out of society right now, then replanted back in the world ten years into the future. You think your problems are tough now, try adding a felony conviction to your resume. Oh, then, there are the ignorant people who fear you as a rapist because you went to prison.

I share this with you not because I believe you need to worry more about your safety or security. I tell you this to help you get all the facts together as you progress towards a better tomorrow. Through educating yourself in experience, relationships, and information you can be a sounder and well-rounded individual. It is better for you and us equally.
